Business Owners Take Stance On Downtown Casino

July 31, 2007

by Cliff Judy

Some business owners say the possibility of a casino in downtown Wichita could have them moving out.  If a casino is approved, a seven-member panel will then help decide where it's put.

The CEO of Intrust Bank and the president of Cargill Meats both say they've watched the casino issue closely.

They say they want the best possible working environment for their employees, and if a downtown casino affects that, they may move their headquarters out of downtown.

"From my examination of the situation, I have yet to find anybody tell me that a casino will enhance that environment," says Charlie Chandler, Intrust's CEO.

While some business owners are wary of a downtown casino, other think it could help their income.

"I think it could be great for us," says Leslie Kinder, owner of Melange Custom Jewelry in Delano.  "I think it could be great for our businesses, especially if we embrace it and work with them when they develop it."

If a casino is approved in Sedgwick County, developers must submite a minimum bid of $250 million to build it.
