Greensburg Residents Attend Highway Information Session

October 11, 2007

By Megan Strader

Kathy Doherty was the first person to grab a comment card at Thursday's Highway 54 information session.

"I think we need to be involved in a lot more of the decisions around here that what a lot of us are." And the decision to move the highway is one that directly effects Doherty. Her lot sits in the path where KDOT wants it to go.

"It was bad enough with the tornado taking it and then hearing I was also losing my lot it was a shock." But like many other people who showed up for the meeting, Doherty has grown accustomed to the idea.

KDOT officials still want people to speak up so they know they're doing what's best for the people and the city. Martin Miller spoke on behalf of KDOT.

"You want to build the safest most efficient highway can but you also want to serve the local community and so we use the local input to help us guide on serving the local communities and how best we can do that."

"That's why several engineers, designers and consultants were on hand to explain the proposal and answer any questions people have.

Miller adds, "We don't want to surprise anybody by our proposal and just to give people another opportunity to see what we're working on here."

But without a timeline for construction, Doherty and others still have one lingering concern. "I don't know whether I'll still be around when it gets done."
