Greensburg Hosts Storm Spotter Meeting

February 26, 2008

Just as recovering from a mess like the May 4th tornado was a new experience for residents of Greensburg, Jeff Hutton was in uncharted territory Monday night, giving a weather presentation to a town wiped out by a tornado less than a year ago.

"Usually lightening is the biggest threat but now try to convince people that have been through this disaster that it is lightening because it was obviously a tornado."

His audience on included the expected, firefighters and emergency responders. But given what happened May fourth, the seats were filled with more than just those who have to keep an eye out for storms.

"A lot of people have never seen a storm of this magnitude and for it hit a town like this everybody is on edge," says Luke Derstein. He works for the Greensburg School and hopes what he learns could help keep the kids there safe.

Kids like 12 year old John Colclazir. He says he's always found weather interesting and wishes he would have known what he was seeing when he watched last year's storm roll in.

"We didn't see anything and finally my dad realized it was right in front of us. We were staring right into it...you just couldn't see it."

So while Luke and John want to know what to look for, Hutton just wants to remember what do to stay safe, and not take anything for granted.

"They did the right thing and tried to take shelter as best they could. So again, that's what we want people to do and know that it could happen again."
