Arkansas River Coalition Members Clean Up for Riverfest

The yearly Riverfest celebration wouldn't be as appealing if it weren't for local organizations like the Arkansas River Coalition. Along with the Sierra Club and other concerned citizen based groups, the ARC focuses their attention on the banks of the river. Anyone of like mind is welcome to join.

The current of the river tends to pick up debris and deposit it along the banks. This garbage not only damages the water in the river as well as the habitats in it but also creates a trashy atmosphere for the "Riverfest."  Most of the trash is on the bank but depending on how low the water is, sometimes the clean up involves a little wading. Russ Icke, president of the ARC, said he once found an entire computer washed up on a sand bar in the middle of the river.

In collaboration with the city, the ARC focuses on this litter before the celebration, ensuring that it can go on in a clean environment. The river is divided into sections, ARC being in charge of the bank area from the bridge in Sim Park all the way to the Seneca Street Bridge, just over a mile's worth of territory.

The cleanup is scheduled for May 3rd and anyone who is interested is welcome to join. The ARC members will be found at the red walking bridge in Sim Park at 9 a.m. Additional information is available at Arkriver.org.
