Greensburg Seniors Prepare for Two Milestones

May 02, 2008

That first day of school excitement was there, but their old school wasn't. "I mean your senior year is already pretty chaotic with everything you have to do but I didn't know if it would be worse," Says Greensburg Senior Jarrett Schaef.

He and his 17 classmates showed up for school on August 15th, not knowing what to expect. Since that day they've learned how to weave their way through their temporary school and weave their way through the challenges it created.

Jarrett adds, "After everything that's happened we could just slack off and not work hard in class. We could not try in our practices we could just lay down and die but it had the opposite effect and everyone was just double motivated and did twice as much work."

Take the boys basketball team. Jarrett was among the players who made it all the way to state, without even having a home court to play on. "That's one memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life," says Student Council Presidet David Cesmant.

But there's one memory that hasn't even happened yet, graduating one year to the day of when the tornado hit. And doing it with a very special guest, President Bush.

"I was kind of worried when they switched it to that day that our graduation would kind of be overshadowed by everything else that was going on but I think just being a part of everything that's going on is going to be important," says Jarrett.

The class says their closeness has made the year much easier and helped squash any doubts people had about what they could do. David adds, "We're just like a family we just kind of have to stick together and work our way through it and just continue to push forward."
