Dr. Susan Nelson suggests the following responsibilities for pet owners:

  • RSVP. Make reservations with pet sitters early to avoid rushed last minute decisions.
  • Social Butterfly - and Dog. Make sure your pet is well socialized and accustomed to allowing strangers to handle it.
  • Show Some ID. Maintain current identification tags and vaccinations for the pet, as well as past and current medication information, should the animal go to the vet.
  • Follow Instructions. Leave clear instructions detailing the sitter's specific responsibilities, as well as any medications the pet may need.
  • Be Organized. Keep pet food and supplies in one place, along with extras.
  • Call for Back-Up II. Leave a house key with a trusted neighbor, just in case.
  • Be Prepared. Show the sitter the home's important aafety features, such as the circuit breaker and security system.
  • Get It In Writing II. Provide written authorization for the pet sitter to act on behalf of you in case of needed medical treatment.
  • RIP FIDO. Discuss your wishes with the pet sitter, should your pet die.
  • In Case of Emergency. Leave your complete contact information and contact information of other family members with the sitter.
