School Crossing Gets Another Look

October 30, 2008

by Jim Grawe (Haysville, Kan.)

An 11-year-old Haysville Middle School student remains in serious condition as parents and community leaders take a second look at the safety of the crossing where she was hit.  It was right on the street that runs along the East side of the school.

There are no crossing lights and signs.  City officials say state and federal guidelines limit the changes that can be made.  Meanwhile neither city nor school officials can remember there ever being a pedestrian accident there before Tuesday.  Still, they plan to re-examine whether the crossing can be made safer.

City officials say vehicle traffic on that side street hasn't increased.  Meanwhile foot traffic decreased this year since Haysville opened a second middle school, dividing the number of students in half.

Police say the driver that hit the girl was driving too fast for the conditions and had ice on her windshield that obstructed her view.
