Boeing Layoffs

January 12, 2009

In November of 2008, Boeing announced that it would be reducing the workforce at the Integrated Defense Systems facility in Wichita by 800 by the end of 2009.  The first round of 70 layoff notices went out November 21st, 60 more layoff notices went out on December 19th.

Boeing blames a lack of work for forcing it to restructure their plant.

Boeing also announced in early January that it would lay off 4,500 more workers company-wide in 2009.  Those cuts are expected to happen in the commercial aircraft division (which is in Washington state).  A spokesperson says this round is necessary because of the economic crisis.

Wichita's Spirit Aerosystems is supplier to Boeing.

Boeing announce in late-January, they would be cutting an additional 5,500 jobs bringing the total number of job losses to 10,000 company-wide.

That latest numbers include 800 layoffs announced at Boeing in Wichita.
