Voter Turnout Lower Than Expected in Primary

by Kim Hynes (WICHITA, Kan.)

Did you know today was an election day?  Primary races are being held for many local city council and school board seat.

The Sedgwick County election commissioner estimated a ten percent  voters turnout.  Now he doesn't even think that will happen.  The November general election had a 75% turnout in Sedgwick County.

At Central Christian Church, poll workers are bored.  In November, they were so busy they couldn't take breaks.  Tuesday they say they can barley stay awake.  As of five o'clock, 59 people had come in to vote.

Poll worker Mel Zimmerman is disappointed.  She says people don't pay much attention to local primaries when they're actually some of the most important races.  She says local elected officials make daily decisions on what to do with your tax dollars. She says if you don't vote you don't have a right to complain about decisions made.
