Lawrence Dumont Ground Zero in Hail Storm

July 09, 2009

By Michael Schwanke

Those who were there say it went from rain to something much worse in a matter of minutes.

"A lot of craziness happened last night," says Wingnuts announcer Steve Schuster.

Lawrence Dumont stadium took a direct hit from large hail.  Cars in the lot were badly damaged.  Windows on many were broken out.  The stadium also has a list of damage a page long.

"You could see it getting bigger and bigger and bigger it was crazy," says intern Caitlin Smith.

The hail created a white-out on the field.  Melting hail and heavy rain also caused minor flooding inside the stadium.

"It's a downer but certainly one of the most unbelievable things I've seen on a baseball field as far as weather goes," says Schuster.

The game was called in the 5th inning. Most fans had already left the stadium because of rain.
