(WICHITA, Kan.)

To us, it's a simple soccer ball. To kids who don't have much, it could mean the world.

"Everybody thought it was a really great idea, so off it went." Robyn Koehn's boyfriend, Senior Airman Derek Martin, is on his third tour of duty in Iraq. As a military policeman he comes across a lot of kids in Baghdad, all hoping he has one thing for them, soccer balls.

Koehn tells Eyewitness News,"They don't have shoes and they don't have anything over there and it's not their fault. They've been exposed to war their whole entire lives so I just thought of anything I could do with the soldiers help."

So she started collecting the toys around Wellington, where she works. She'd hoped to get 10 or 15 but now expects to have at least double that.

"Several people are either going to give me money or go and ask more people for soccer balls. Garden City Community College is also donating, I'm not sure how many they're donating, but I'll actually get those in April after spring conditioning."

She'll be collecting through the end of the month before she deflates the soccer balls and sends them overseas.

"He's actually going to try and video tape it while he's handing them out, just to capture the moment, which I'm really excited to see. They'll probably just be shocked, they normally just get candy or little random toys, so this will be different."  @ @

A simple soccer ball, from half way around the world.

Donations can dropped off at Wellington's Koehn Motors, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Edward Jones and Farmers Insurance.
