Hutch Police: Baby's Death "Does Not Appear Natural"

by Cliff Judy (HUTCHINSON, Kan.)

Police in Hutchinson say it was clear early on a three-month-old girl may not have died from natural causes.  However, they're not yet calling Karina Perez's death foul play.

Around 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to an apartment near 23rd & Lorraine in northeast Hutchinson.  Perez's parents had called a relative saying the girl wasn't responding, and the relative called 911.

Before officers arrived, Perez's parents left to take her to the hospital.  The girl was pronounced dead at Promise Regional Medical Center shortly after their arrival.

"I think from pretty early on, it appeared that it was not of natural causes," says Hutchinson Police Sgt. John Taylor, "and that's all we have at this time."

Sgt. Taylor says police are still investigating.  They will try to talk with family members to find out what happened in the moments before the 911 call.

Investigators will not say if Perez had any obvious injuries.  No other children were in the apartment.
