Thunder Players Watch Old Teammates Go For Gold

February 28, 2010

(WICHITA, Kan.)

While the nation watched the U.S. men's hockey team go for gold against Canada Sunday afternoon, some members of the Wichita Thunder were watching old teammates.

Players like Thunder captain Chris McAllister, who spent six seasons in the NHL, competed against several players on Team USA and Team Canada's rosters. Forwards Brad Thompson and Paul Kelly both had college teammates make the American team.

"It's great to see guys that you know succeeding like that and playing for the best thing in the world," says Kelly.

With plenty of players born in the United States and Canada on the Thunder roster, the game had everyone's attention before they hit the ice for their own game Sunday.

"We have a good mix," says McAllister.  "We have a lot of Canadians and a lot of Americans on our team, so half the team's split and there's a lot of ribbing going back and forth right now."

The Thunder lost to the Arizona Sundogs Sunday night. Players learned just before they hit the ice of Team Canada's 3-2 overtime win.
