State Tax Refunds May Be Late

March 02, 2010

(WICHITA, Kan.)

Kansas Secretary of Revenue Joan Wagnon says the state has limited options for keeping its budget balanced through the end of the current fiscal year.

One option may be to delay state income tax refunds. Wagnon made her comments Tuesday during a meeting at the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce offices.

She said two options are postponing aid payments to public schools and delaying income tax refunds.

Adding to the problem, more Kansans filed early this year. Around 26,000 more people filed taxes this February than last February.

That means the state paid out $20 million more in tax refunds at a time when it doesn't have any money.
