Police ID Man Killed In Weekend Chase

Latest Update:

Wichita investigators say a deadly weekend chase began as a fight between a man and his girlfriend.

Police say 33-year-old Marcells Childs began hitting his 41-year-old girlfriend at her home in the 8700 block of E. Lakeland early Sunday morning. According to police, the woman's 19-year-old son tried to stop the beating before officers could get to the home. Childs threatened the son with a pistol and then left the house just as police arrived.

Officers tried to arrest Childs but he fled. When Childs wouldn't pull over, the officer stopped the chase at 21st and Broadway. Minutes later Childs' vehicle went airborne near Wichita North High School and struck a utility pole, snapping the pole in half. The truck came to rest in a high school tennis court, where the vehicle caught fire. Officers who arrived on the scene moments later pulled Childs from the vehicle and gave the man CPR. He later died at a Wichita hospital.

One man is dead after a police chase ends in a fiery crash. It happened early Sunday morning in north Wichita.

According to police, they were responding to a domestic violence disturbance on Rock Road, when they spotted a pick up truck being driven by a 33 year old man. They say he took off, taking police on a chase.

Police called the pursuit off after a short time. Then they spotted him again near North High School, and they say he then crashed into an electric pole which knocked the power out in a near by neighborhood.

His truck then caught fire, and the driver was pronounced dead a short while later at the hospital. Police are still investigating the incident.

A 33-year old man from Wichita who was being pursued by police, dies after crashing his truck into a Westar Energy power pole.

The incident began shortly after four Sunday morning. Officers received a call of a domestic violence disturbance on Rock Road. When police arrived on the scene, they saw a pickup truck leaving the area.

Authorities attempted to stop the truck. Officers say the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed as it traveled westbound on 21st street.  The driver turned south on Arkansas Road. It was at this point that officers called the chase off, but the driver kept going.

Officers eventually located the vehicle near the North High School.  They say it had crashed into a power pole.  The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the original 911 call was for a disturbance involving a weapon. The incident is still under investigation.
