eSchool Students Get First Prom

April 17, 2010

(WICHITA, Kan.)

It's hard to think of a prom as a new idea. "My prom was a long time ago but it was a lot of fun," explains Pam Wood as she prepares for her daughters prom.

And while the balloons and the lights she and other volunteers put up may be as traditional as it gets, for the students attending, it was anything but.

"This is our first prom here at eSchool," said senior Douglas Sadlowski.

eSchool, or Learning2, is an internet based school where kids work from both a classroom and online - meaning kids don't get to have some of the common high school experiences like prom.

Tim O'Bryhim, an eSchool history teacher tells Eyewitness News,  "I had a student come to me, named Brittany, and Brittany wanted to have a prom in her senior year so I said let's start a committee."

Months later, even Brittany can't believe how it came together. "It was way more extravagant than what I thought it was going to be."

And not only is this the first ever prom for Wichita's eSchool, it could be the first eSchool prom ever.

"I've never heard of an online school doing a prom so we may very well be the first one. There are other programs in the state but I've never heard of them doing anything like this," adds O'Bryhim.

And between a few formal dresses, a couple tuxes and a lot of dance tunes, the kids got an experience they didn't think they would ever get.

"I've been looking forward to this. I've been here since 9th grade and we haven't had prom, so it's cool having my first prom," said Sadlowski.

Brittany Jannisch-Cox adds, "It's really nice because we don't get to have high school prom and homecomings and stuff like that so it's a good way to bring everybody together and try to have that social life that we don't get to have."

A dance many of us looked at as just a write of passage, could be the start of a new tradition for even the eSchool.
