Immigration, healthcare, and education dominated a forum in Hutchinson Tuesday night as seven candidates fight for the First District Congressional seat currently held by Rep. Jerry Moran.

All seven Republican candidates were in agreement on topics discussed in the forum hosted by The Hutchinson News, the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce, and Young Professionals of Reno County.

Candidates Jim Barnett, Sue Boldra, Tim Huelskamp, Marck Cobb, Tracey Mann, Monte Shadwick, and Rob Wasinger say the federal government has grown too big. They say spending and decision making should be left to local governments.

They also all agree that the United States needs to secure its border and support sending more troops and money to help.

The candidates addressed the issue of young professionals leaving Kansas. They say Kansas businesses are overtaxed which prevents economic growth in the state.

Rep. Jerry Moran is running for the U.S. Senate. He's represented the state's largest Congressional district since 1996.

There is only one Democrat in the race. Former Salina Mayor Alan Jilka is running to be his party's nominee.

The primary elections are August 3.
