A plane crashes without its pilot in Wellington Monday afternoon because the plane started and made its way towards the runway before the pilot could get in the plane.
The 1968 Cessna 172 went down the taxi-way, crossed the runway and crashed into a muddy ditch.
"The front end of it, the prop was damaged, and we don't know damage to engine or stuff like that," Wellington Police Captain Bill Upton said.
Police say the pilot stores his plane at the Wellington Municipal Airport and flies it often. He was going to fly it to Wichita for a check-up.
But he could not get it started because its battery was dead. He tried to give it a charge but it still would not start, so he went out and hand started the plane.
