Parents near a south Wichita park want more signs warning drivers of children in the area.  It comes the day after a 15-year-old boy was hit by a pickup truck when the boy tried to cross the street on his bike.

The boy is in fair condition, and police on scene indicated the driver of the truck wasn't at fault.  The boy didn't take advantage of a crosswalk half a block away, and witnesses told police he rode his bike into traffic.

Parents near Osage Park say they weren't surprised someone was hurt in the area.

"If you're being...I'm sorry, an idiot and going at a high rate of speed where all those kids are, that makes no sense," says Cachket Boyer, who lives across the street from Osage Park.

Boyer and other parents believe more should be done to slow down drivers and let them know children are playing.  Only one of the streets surrounding the park is marked with a 20 mile per hour speed limit when children are playing.

"We would like to see a slow down sign," says Cachket.  "There's a park.  Kids are playing."

The City of Wichita does not use signs with the words "Children Playing" because it actually considers them a detriment to safety.  Public Works officials tell Eyewitness News police couldn't enforce the signs.  Also, studies have shown when children see such signs, they're more likely to think it's okay to play near or in the street.
