Air Conditioner Repair Workers In High Demand

June 10, 2010

by Dave Roberts (WICHITA, Kan.)

It's hot and one of the busiest times for air conditioning repair companies. Technicians are not only get a lot of calls from customers but from other companies wanting to hire them.

"Companies always want the best guys," said Jeremy Parks, a technicians with Fahnstock Heating and Cooling. "I received a phone call the other day."

That phone call came from another company wanting to hire him. He and managers from other companies say that during this time of year, that's not unusual.

It's a practice that's been going on for years. Head hunters swoop in during this busy time trying to hire away experienced workers. It drives up competition for wages and benefits.

According the bureau of labor statistics, the median wage for an HVAC technician in Kansas is just over forty one thousand dollars a year, or an hourly wage of $19.36. An entry-level HVAC technicians make about $26 thousand per year in Kansas.

But the competition could also cost you. There is a concern within the industry that the cost to keep up with technicians' growing salaries could be passed on to the customer.

"I mean, that money's got to come from somewhere. It does get passed on to the customers and that would be the major downside of it."
