Hospital Shooting Suspect In Custody

Latest Update:  5:30 p.m. Monday

by Cliff Judy (WICHITA, Kan.)

Wichita Police arrest a woman accused of killing her boyfriend in the parking lot of a local hospital.  Police believe the 33-year-old woman shot 30-year-old Jose Galan-Delgado early Sunday morning.

Investigators believe the incident actually started a block away from Via Christi Hospital on East Harry.  They say Galan-Delgado was shot, and his girlfriend then drove him to the hospital nearby.

A 24-year-old patient at the hospital told police she saw the girlfriend shoot Galan-Delgado a second time in the hospital parking lot.

The witness declined an on-camera interview with Eyewitness News Monday afternoon, but was still clearly shaken as she described the shooting.  She says she first noticed the woman's SUV because it drove in the "exit" of the Emergency Room parking lot.  She says the SUV stopped about 30 feet from her, the woman in the driver's seat pushed open the passenger door, another shot was fired, and Galan-Delgado fell into the parking lot.

"I'm just in shock," says the witness.  "I mean, this is the kind of stuff that happens on TV or in movies.  It was so cold."

Police found the suspect at an apartment complex on South Rock Road Monday morning.  Her sister says she was being abused and didn't know what to do.

"I just couldn't believe it," says Rebecca Shultz.  "I asked her why she would do something like that.  She told me it was self defense because he was real abusive towards her."

The 33-year-old suspect has not been charged.

Evening Update (6/14)

By Cliff Judy (WICHITA, Kan.)

Wichita Police continue to search for at least one homicide suspect after an SUV dumped a man with two gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a local hospital.

Investigators say the victim was approximately 30 years old.

Around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, a woman walking to her car in the Via Christi-St. Joseph Hospital parking lot saw a dark-colored SUV pull up.  The woman told police she heard a gunshot, and someone inside the SUV then pushed the victim out of the vehicle before driving away.

The victim had two gunshot wounds and was transported from St. Joseph to Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital.  He died around 4:00 a.m.

Late Sunday afternoon, a detective from Wichita PD's Homicide Unit told Eyewitness News no suspects had been arrested.  The witness told police a woman was driving the SUV, but she couldn't see if there were any other suspects in the vehicle.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the hospital.  However, the detective said the hospital's camera was so high on the building that it was difficult to make out the SUV's color in the nighttime video.

The vehicle is being described as a dark, larger-size SUV.  A captain on scene early Sunday morning said witnesses also described a silver stripe along the bottom of the SUV.
