WICHITA, Kan. — Fireworks will go on sale in Sedgwick County communities Sunday. And for the first time, those living in unincorporated parts of the county can legally shoot off fireworks. But they'll have to buy them somewhere else, the county isn't allowing sales this year.
Sedgwick County Fire Marshall Tim Millspaugh gave an update to the Sedgwick County Commission Wednesday. He says the fireworks purchased in communities like Wichita are legal to shoot off in the county. He says use common sense when using fireworks in order to stay safe.
County fire fighters will be giving a safety presentation on using fireworks at the Bel Aire city park Saturday. Bel Aire is also allowing fireworks for the first time this year.
Millspaugh says since fireworks are now legal in the county, he's hoping there are fewer complaints this year. He says firefighters will help respond to fireworks complaints, to free up deputies for other calls. Fireworks are allowed to be shot off from July 1-5th. Millspaugh says it's best to check with your local community on what's specifically allowed where you live.
