(MEADE COUNTY, Kan.) — Investigators believe a tired driver is behind a deadly accident in Meade County.
The accident happened around 12:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 54 east of the junction with K-23.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says seven people were riding in an SUV when the 25-year-old driver fell asleep, drifted across the highway and hit a guardrail. The impact caused the SUV to roll several times, finally coming to rest in a ravine.
55-year-old Juana Alonso Morales-Real from San Bernardino, CA, was killed in the accident. Six other people riding in the SUV were hurt, including an infant, a two-year-old and a six-year-old. All of the victims were from California.
Investigators say the baby was in a car seat, but the car seat was not properly restrained. They say no on else riding in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.
