WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 4-2 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Dustin Jones set the tone for the game hitting a two-out, three-run home run of of Doug Hurn in the top of the first inning.
The Wingnuts answered back with one run in the bottom half. Josh Horn doubled off the glove of right fielder Jon Owings with two outs and scored on an RBI single to center by Mario Delgado.
Kent Sakamoto hit a solo home run off of Hurn in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1.
Explorers starter Mikael Ryder allowed just two runners past first base after Delgado's first inning single.
Down 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Wingnuts rallied to put the tying and winning runs on base. Delgado grounded a single up the middle against right-hander Eddie Delacruz to open the inning. After striking out Jackson Melian and Chad Rothford, Delacruz walked Jeff Christy and allowed a single through the left side to Michael Thompson. Jake Bradhaw was hit by a pitch forcing in a run, but Delacruz came back to strike out Steve Pearson to end the game.
Hurn took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in five innings while striking out two. Brandon Mathes pitched two perfect innings of relief, while Clint McKeever worked a scoreless eighth in his professional debut. Ryder earned the win for Sioux City, allowing one run on six hits in eight innings. Ryder is now 3-0 this season against the Wingnuts in three starts. Delacruz was credited with the save.
The Wingnuts begin a three-game home series against St. Paul on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Sean Teague goes to the mound for the Wingnuts against left-hander Ryan Morse.
