Are we pushing seat belts?

July 08, 2010|By Roger Cornish | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — A caller to our Answerback line says we should stop pushing the new seat belt law.

She complains that we often mention in stories about accidents whether the victims were wearing belts or not...and she says it's not been proven that seat belts always save lives.

First of all, it is part of our job to remind viewers about new laws taking effect. It doesn't matter if we all think the law is good or bad,  it's just a heads up so you don't end up paying a fine.

Secondly, I think if you speak with anyone you'd consider an expert on auto accidents, they'll tell you they have no doubt that drivers and passengers are markedly safer when buckled in.

If you still don't want to wear a belt, that's your call.
