(CHASE, Kan.) — The Hutchinson Corrrectional Facility says Robert James Nickelson was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Sunday in Colby, Kansas.
He was returned to Hutchinson at 6:15 Monday morning and placed in administrative segregation. Investigators with the Kansas Department of Corrections will investigate his escape.
Officials at the prison say Nickelson left a trail that gave law enforcement clues about his destination. A shortbed pickup truck disappeared near the area where Nickelson escaped, and a resident in Hoisington reported the prisoner asked them about the quickest route out of Kansas. The resident told Nickelson K-4 to Colorado would be best, and prison officials soon put out information that Nickelson may be traveling along K-4 or K-281.
Nickelson was on work release from the Cal-Main plant in Chase when he disappeared Sunday evening.
