Wichita police will charge more for seat belt violation

July 13, 2010|by Kim Hynes | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita police will charge you more for not wearing a seat belt.  The city council approved the primary seat belt law Tuesday to match state law.  Lawmakers approved a primary seat belt law this year and it went into effect July 1st.

State lawmakers reduced the ticket fee for not wearing a seat belt from $30 to $5.  The City of Wichita opted to keep the fee at $30, which is more restrictive than state law.  Council member Paul Gray voted against the change, saying police shouldn't be spending their time focusing on seat belts.
