WICHITA, Kan. — Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak is seen as an untouchable, almost immortal baseball record. Of all the guys in the majors that have tried to break it or even tie it, no one has done it.
In fact, it took someone in college to do it. Florida International's Garrett Wittels tied DiMaggio's record this past season, but didn't get a chance to break it or tie the 58 game streak set by Robin Ventura at Oklahoma State University because his team lost to Dartmouth in the playoffs.
The record will be waiting for him, and believe it or not, he is already thinking about next season.
"The biggest thing I will take into the fall is to get better everyday, get myself better, get my team better," said Wittels. "We have eight out of nine starters returning, so we will definitely strive for some big things this year."
