Burglars saw hole in building, steal scrap metal

August 19, 2010|By Dave Roberts | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Thieves saw a hole in the wall of a southwest Wichita business, and steal so much aluminum the managers are still trying to determine exactly how much was taken.

The burglary happened sometime between Tuesday afternoon and when it was discovered, on Wednesday afternoon at Castle Metals in the 2900 block of south All Hallows.

"Someone knew what they were wanting or where they wanted to get in at," said Andrew Dyke of Castle Metals.

Wichita police say it appears the burglars used a reciprocating saw to cut a hole in the wall of a warehouse. Then, they peeled the wall back so they could steal the metal.

"The way it looks to us," Dyke says, "they just took the material right through the center of [the hole] and shoved it out onto a truck or trailer."

The managers and owners are performing an inventory to determine exactly what was stolen and how much it's all worth.

"Scrap value? I don't know what it would be [worth]. But as far as what they took from our company, it would be tens of thousands of dollars."

If you have any information that can help in the investigation, please call the police.
