(Hutchinson, Kan.) — Faris Elementary School in Hutchinson was closed because rain water seeped into the building. The school says water flooded four classrooms and the gym. A school faculty member discovered the water early Tuesday.

The school is expected to be back open on Wednesday.

School officials say a clog in the pipes caused the drains to overflow in the courtyard. Crews dug up the area in front of the school looking for the clog.

When parents got word that their children wouldn't be going to school on Tuesday, many were caught off guard.

"A couple more minutes and we would've been gone," said Tammy Castleberry, whose son, Matthew, was supposed to start his second day of first grade.

"Matthew got dressed, I was getting ready to go to work and we got a phone call from the principal."

The six-year-old got to an extra day to play, while crews got everything dry for school Wednesday.
