(WICHITA, Kan.) — A suspect is shot by police after a traffic pursuit late Sunday night. It ended in the 400 block of S. Fountain around 10:15.

Officers were working near the area of 15th and Grove, when they saw the suspect almost hit another police car. Officers followed him. When they tried to pull him over for erratic driving, he took off, running a stop sign.

The chase lasted about five minutes and reaches speeds near 50 miles-per-hour. It ended in a cul-de-sac in College Hill.

Wichita police say the suspect got out of his car with a handgun. The officers shot at the man and hit him three times. He was taken to Wesley Medical Center. Doctors performed surgery on the man this morning.

The officers were not hurt in the exchange.

The 24-year-old was driving a stolen truck. Police say it was stolen from the Dollar General in El Dorado on Sunday.
