Wichitans, BBB on the lookout for roofing fraud

September 21, 2010|By Michael Schwanke | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Homeowner Glenda Volk says they're coming from everywhere.

“It's been just a stream of roofers coming around,” says Volk whose home was damaged in the recent hail storm. “We had one from Illinois come by."

The Better Business Bureau of Kansas is seeing the same thing. More than 100 hundred companies have called the local office since last week's storm wanting one thing.“All wanting to join,” says BBB of Kansas CEO Mac Carter.

The companies want the same accreditation many local companies have. But it won’t be easy.

“They’re going to have to wait three months up to a year depending on their status in their hometown,” says Carter. He says companies will have to prove they’re trustworthy first.

“They're not just coming here to get accredited, finish up Friday, and then go home.”

You can contact the BBB by calling 1-800-856-2417 or visiting its website on the left side of this page.
