Mock amber alert in Arkansas City

October 01, 2010|By John Boyd | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(ARKANSAS CITY, Kan.) — Officials in Cowley County are holding a mock Amber Alert drill in Arkansas City today.

The drill will help the state’s new Child Abduction Response (C.A.R.T.) receive certification.

In the drill, a 14-year-old girl was abducted by a man who dragged her into his car while walking her younger brother to school.

It's only a drill in Cowley County, but State and local officials say they hope this training will help get faster more efficient results when looking for missing children.

"You only have about three hours when a child goes missing until they are likely killed," said Arkansas City Chief of Police Shawn Wallace.

When an Amber Alert is issued, local authorities now have the option to bring in the C.A.R.T. team as well to assist in finding a missing child. This is the only C.A.R.T. team in Kansas and one of only ten in the entire United States. It's a new trend in public safety.
