Wichita mother upset over location of bus stop

October 01, 2010|By Megan Strader | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

WICHITA, Kan — It's a normal part of Casey Keeney's day, starting at about 4:00 she waits and she worries.

Her six year-old daughter is one of the only two kids who get off at a bus stop at the intersection of Third and Meridian.

Keeney feels its dangerous to drop kids off so close to such a busy street and for months has been fighting to have the stop moved further down Third Street and away from Meridian.

"A car could lose control and come over the curb. Some weirdo could grab my kid and she could be in their car and gone on Meridian."

Keeney even filed a formal request to have the stop moved. It was denied by the district transportation department because, as the paper says, the stop is already supposed to be at least 100 yards from the intersection.

"I told her (bus driver) yesterday morning and she didn't do anything yesterday afternoon. That's when I made the decision I was gonna stand in front of the bus."

She stood in front of the bus Friday morning until police were brought in.

We called the Wichita School District to see what they had to say. We were told the bus currently stop a safe 20-30 feet from the intersection of Third and Meridian.

But when 4:30 rolled around, Eyewitness News watched the bus pulled less than 10 feet from the busy intersection.

We called the district again, this time we were told the problem will be looked and fixed.

"I tried to do it the right way, it didn't work so this is my way. Mama bear protecting her cubs, that's all it is."
