October 06, 2010|by Eyewitness Sports

WICHITA, Kan. — For the first time in more than 50 years, Wichita State will play a men's basketball game in downtown Wichita.

Wichita State's Athletic Director announced Wednesday the Shockers will play Tulsa at INTRUST Bank Arena.

“This is a partnership opportunity for WSU, Sedgwick County and the City of Wichita for the Shockers to play basketball in a great venue," said AD Eric Sexton in a news release. "INTRUST Bank Arena must also host a Division I basketball game this year as part of these same partners bringing the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament event to Wichita in the spring, so the Tulsa game made sense for a lot of reasons."

This WSU home game will be played on December 21st. It is included in the Wichita State men’s basketball season ticket package for 2010-11.

The Wichita State news release says, that because the venue is INTRUST Bank Arena, the tickets for this game will be mailed at a later date than the remainder of the home game package.  The Wichita State Athletic Department will utilize priority points to assign seating locations for 2010-11 season ticket holders through the SASO priority points system.

This will be the 120th time Tulsa and the Shockers play, and the first game since 2004-05 when the Shockers won, 71-66, in Tulsa, Okla.

The series first started in 1930-31 as a home-and-home event. The two teams last played in Wichita during the 2003-04 season when the Shockers took a 66-58 win. Tulsa leads the overall series by one game, 60-59.
