Belgian company choses Wichita to expand

October 26, 2010|By Michael Schwanke | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — A company based in Belgium has chosen Wichita as its first place to expand in North America.

It’s a small reason to celebrate in an economy that seems to produce a lot of negative news.

“I think we have faith it will turn around. Sometimes we get mired in the bad news with what's going on in Wichita,” says Debra Teufel with the Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition.

Teufel is referring to SAMTECH, a software company that specializes in aviation and wind turbines.

It chose Wichita as the first place to set up shop in North America.

“It was really the perfect location to have an office here,” says Freddie Colsoul, General Manager of SAMTECH Wichita.

And it's possibly a sign of Wichita’s new economy. Smaller companies instead of the large manufactures like Hawker or Cessna that make the news.

“I think you'll see a lot of quiet announcements like this with five or 10 employees at a time. That's the nature of business today,” says Teufel.

Despite what's happening now, SAMTECH has confidence Wichita and its aviation industry will recover.

“They should have confidence in themselves. It's a downturn, but that doesn't mean it's the end of Wichita,” says Colsoul.

Colsoul says the company expects the aviation industry to turn in 2012 and wants to be in place when that happens.
