WPD: More counterfeit money cases

November 19, 2010|By Robert Marin | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita police are dealing with another seven cases of counterfeit bills in Wichita. The new cases come after a warning from WPD last week to watch out for funny money.

Wichita police warn Wichita area shoppers to watch out for counterfeit money.

According to our news partners at KFDI radio, the department has seen an increase in counterfeit bills, most of them $20 bills. Police say several people have been arrested, but they expect to see more counterfeit bills as Christmas approaches.

Officials say there are security features you can check for to make sure your bills are real.

  • Color Shifting Ink: in the lower right corner of bills, it will change from copper to green in color when you tilt the bill.
  • Watermark: this will be visible from both sides of the bill when you hold it up to the light.
  • Security strip: this will be visible running vertically across the bill when you hold it up to the light.

If you run across a counterfeit bill, avoid handling it as much as possible and call police. You can learn more about spotting counterfeit money at the U.S. Secret Service's "Know Your Money" website.

Wichita police say they worked 77 counterfeiting cases in September and October, up from 20 in the same two months of 2009.
