(WICHITA, Kan.) — Here's a look behind the scenes as a Wichita woman's dream comes true. It was all captured on Wednesday's Oprah show that aired on KWCH 12. There were series of surprises that took her from Wichita to Las Vegas to Chicago in only a few weeks.
When Oprah does something on her show, she usually does it big. Bringing a country superstar on stage wouldn't be big enough. Instead she showed how she and Garth Brooks granted Laci Boyle's life-long wish.
Oprah used Laci's co-workers to pull it off. Danielle Schulte lured her into her office, telling Laci she was going to watch a video on her computer. But this was no video. It was Oprah, live with her audience via Skype.
"I keep looking, like what is going on?," explained Laci. "This is so surreal! Oprah is talking to me, saying my name!"
She still shakes as she tells the story of how it happened. On that call, Oprah tells Laci she has a front row seat at a sold out Garth Brooks concert. A week later, she was off to Vegas, where she got to meet the man who's picture once hung on her wall.
Laci says that meeting was private, at Garth's request.
"He sat on the floor," Laci explained. "He offered us his couch, and we just sat there. He is such an amazingly nice, down to earth person. He wanted to know who we were and how we got there."
How they got there is a story in itself. Laci's future husband Ryan wrote to Oprah, asking if she could get Garth to play at their wedding. The response would come two years later.
"They said they were really sorry that they couldn't get Garth Brooks to play at our wedding, but that they wanted to surprise me," she said. "They told him not to tell me that they contacted me."
That brings the story back to the surprise in the office.
"It really couldn't have happened to a better person," said Schulte, the co-worker who helped facilitate the surprise. "She is gracious and wonderful. It was surreal, but fun."
Laci says she's grateful to everyone for making it happen, especially her husband.
"He certainly deserves a big thank you. He never lets me forget how much he loves me, and I will try to do the same," Laci said, with tears in her eyes.
Laci and Ryan were in the audience for the taping of the Oprah show, when Garth performed a song the DJ played at their wedding, "Friends in Low Places".
"At our reception, I had my head on Ryan's shoulder. When we looked up, all of our friends were in a big circle around us, swaying to the music," Laci explained.
And so this performance was the perfect ending, to a whirlwind, month-long dream come true. And Oprah made it happen, of course in a big way.
