Best of DIW?: Kids Stuff

December 02, 2010|By Kim Setty | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

The holiday season is here and that means---shopping!

To help you with your list, we’re highlighting the best “Does It Work” items we tested this past year. This week we focus on kids (and everyone who is a kid at heart!)

Soda Stream

One product that not only worked, but had our group of middle school kids doubled over laughing was the Soda Stream. It converts a bottle of plain old tap water into your favorite flavor of pop.

What's so funny about that? When it carbonates the water it makes a sound that is very similar to, well, um…. flatulence. Combine that with middle school boys and you get the picture! Soda Stream costs about $80 for the unit. Not counting that initial investment, the flavor bottles make pop for about 25-cents for 12 ounces.

You can buy the units here in Wichita. Find Soda Stream

Kool-Aid Fun Fizz

If you're looking for something with less sugar, how about Kool-Aid Fun Fizz? The five-calorie tablets each make one glass of Kool-Aid. Just drop it in the water, watch it fizz and drink it. Our testers---kids---loved it.

"Tastes like lemonade, but fizzy! Good1"

It's $2 for eight tablets and available at your local grocery store.

Mind Flex

Our third product takes a little more courage to use—especially if you look in the mirror. Mind Flex claims to use your brainwave activity to start up a fan, which blows a ball up in the air. Where does the 'courage' come in?

The headset you have to wear to operate it wraps across your forehead and clips to your earlobes like earrings. Not exactly what guys are used to wearing! But our testers say it works!

"I don't know how to explain it," says Andy Schepis. "I'm looking at the ball and its going up!" The game costs about $60 and was one of the hardest new toy products to find on the shelves during the 2009 holiday season. Even we had to wait until nearly the spring to find one to buy. But Andy says the wait was worth it.

"I never thought I'd say this, but yes, it works! It's amazing. It works!"

You can buy Mind Flex locally at Target, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us.
