Controversial Facebook page concerns USD 259

December 09, 2010|By Dave Roberts | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — A page on Facebook has school district officials concerned. On it are videos of young people fighting and photos with comments that many say are offensive. The site says the fights are taking place inside South High School, and that the photos are of students at Wichita schools.

The page has hundreds of friends, and the school district wants it taken down. It says the videos were not shot in South, and none of the students in the fights go there either.

Regardless though, some students went to the principal of South about the page.

"They were very upset by it," Principal Cara Ledy said. "We're not going to tolerate that kind of activity."

Ledy and the school resource officer went to the Wichita Police's cyber crime division to try and get the page taken down.

Ledy says a similar site was up earlier in the year. After going to the police, that one was disabled.

"We felt like it was taken cared of," she said. "It was no longer accessible and then all of a sudden the kids come back said it's back."

She says her students were complaining mostly about the photos and the comments that are attached. They accuse the girls in the photos of cheating on their boyfriends and dating gang members.

"Our district has a very strong stance on bullying, and we are not going to tolerate it in 259 and we're going to do everything we can to put a stop to it."

The district says it received several complaints about the page through "Speak Up." This allows students to send a text message about something to the district anonymously.
