Wichita police reopen section of downtown

December 13, 2010|by Christina Karaoli Taylor

WICHITA, Kan. — Three hours after a man claimed he had a bomb, police clear his backpack.

The situation began before Noon Monday, with a disturbance at the S.R.S. building in downtown Wichita.  Police say a homeless man said he had a bomb in his backpack.

Officers shut down the area near Douglas between Broadway and Topeka, and called out the bomb squad.

Bomb squad members inspected the bag and determined it had only personal belongings, shoes and food inside.

Police admit the whole thing took up a lot of resources and was an inconvenience, especially for people who couldn't get out of parking lots in the blocked-off area, but they say safety was a priority.
