Not too late for energy tax credit

December 27, 2010|By Melody Pettit | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — The deadline is just days away, but it's still not too late to participate in the federal tax credit for energy efficiency.

"It's free tax money," said President of Northstar Comfort Services Jeff Boone.

The credit offers a 30% rebate, up to $1,500 for home improvement things like energy efficient windows, heating and cooling units, and water heaters.

While there may not be enough time to do those bigger things, there are some things you can still do to take advantage of the credit, including weather stripping and adding insulation.

"We've seen a definite up-tick in people wanting to get some work done if they can squeeze it in," Boone said.

Boone is scrambling to fill all the demands for people wanting him to install installation before the deadline.

"It's not too late yet we're trying to get in as many as possible," he said.

But he says the insulation is an easy do it yourself project.

"As long as you buy and install it before the end of the year it will count. The attic is the most effective," said Boone.

The tax credit only applies to equipment and not towards labor costs. The government is offering a 10% tax credit in 2011.
