South Wichita home burns Friday morning

December 31, 2010|By Megan Strader | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — "The flames just started shooting out. We tried to put water on it but to no avail," explains Brian Weeks.

Nearly 24 hours after it happened, he and his wife Jennifer say it's still sinking in. With little left of their south Oliver home, the couple will ring in the New Year trying to find anything salvageable.

"Not much happened to that dollhouse, she's had that since she was a little girl," Brian pointed out.

The couple says it's the little things that's allowing them to stay optimist. "It seems like the things that were the most sentimental are the things that are still here by the grace of God," said Jennifer.

Pictures and antiques, all look covered in soot but will fine once their cleaned. Jennifer just wishes she could say the same about the house which has been part of her family since the 50's.

"Everybody stepped forward to help us today, I can't say enough for people to take time out of their night to come and say, 'here's a coat,' or 'do you want to come in and get warm,' or 'what can we do to help?'"

And while most would call this a pretty terrible way to start a new year, the Weeks say they're trying really hard not to see things that way.

"New hope for the new year. We start new tomorrow, it's a clean slate."
