Street vendors now allowed to sell food in Wichita's Old Town

January 11, 2011|by Kim Hynes | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — You'll soon be able to buy a hot dog from street vendors in Old Town.  The Wichita City Council amended the ordinance pertaining to street vendors Tuesday.

Two hot dog vendors approached the city about selling food to people in Old Town after the bars close. The city realized its current ordinance doesn't allow street vendors outside the central business district, which meant Old Town was exempt.  City staff recommended the council amend the ordinance to include Old Town.  The council approved the measure without discussion.

The changes allow street vendors of all types to sell in Old Town after getting permission from the city.  In 2011, the city plans to further review the street vendor ordinance to eventually include Waterwalk.
