USD 259 discusses school closing policy

January 12, 2011|By Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Susan Arensman with USD 259 joined us by phone on Eyewitness News This Morning on KSCW to discuss the district's policies for closing school.

Arensman says the district works with weather consultants to make the decision. She says their main concern is the safety of the students.

When side streets aren't clear, the buses run late. That leaves students outside while waiting for their bus for extended periods of time. When the temperatures and wind chills are low like they were Tuesday and Wednesday, kids are more at risk for frostbite and hypothermia.

Arensman says the district hopes to reopen Thursday.

-----------------------

There will be no classes for USD 259 on Wednesday, January 12 and all Wednesday evening activities will be rescheduled due dangerously low wind chill projections.

It is important to note that all non-attendance centers will remain open. All non-attendance center personnel are expected to report to work except for 196-day FPC staff.

All teachers, paras and school-based food staff do not report to work. All other school-based employees – including custodians, secretaries, clerks and administrative personnel – are expected to report to work as well.
