(WICHITA, Kan.) — It’s official. Cabela’s announced late Tuesday afternoon it will build a store in Wichita.
The 80,000-square-foot store will be located in the Regency Lakes Shopping Center at 21st Street and Greenwich Road. It will be Cabela’s second store in Kansas, joining its Kansas City location.
“Kansans are no strangers to Cabela’s or the outdoors,” said Cabela’s Chief Executive Officer Tommy Millner in a statement.
“It’s because of their loyalty to our brand and their passion for sports like hunting, fishing and camping that we’re able to build another store in the Sunflower State.”
The company says a large glass storefront will allow customers to view much of the store’s interior from the outside. The inside will include conservation-themed wildlife displays and trophy animal mounts. The store will also feature a Gun Library and Bargain Cave.
Construction is expected to start in late July 2011. The typical Cabela's employs about 200 people.
“It's always a hassle to drive to Kansas City. I think one in Wichita would be just fine for us. It would make a lot of people happy,” says sportsman George Watts.
Mayor Carl Brewer says it’s great news for Wichita.
“To have something of this caliber and we're just starting out 2011, it’s very exciting for us,” says Brewer.
The Regency Lakes Shopping Center also includes Super Target and World Market stores as well as a Hampton Inn & Suites, with more retailers expected to open stores this year.
Cabela's went public in 2004, with that fiscal year's revenue reaching $1.56 billion.
