Former Heights star pitcher to be opening day starter for Mets

January 19, 2011|By JENN BATES | Eyewitness Sports

{NEW YORK, NY} — Former Heights pitcher Mike Pelfrey will be the opening day starter for the New York Mets.  Mets' manager Terry Collins made the announcement at a charity event earlier in the day.

Mets ace Johan Santana is expected to miss the first half of the season, leaving the door open for Pelfrey to take over the #1 starting role.  The road isn't exactly easy for Pelfrey though; his first two starts this season will most likely be against the Marlins Josh Johnson and then the Phillies Roy Halladay.

Pelfrey went 15-9 last year with a 3.66 ERA and 113 strikeouts.
