(WICHITA, Kan.) — A Wichita woman is in critical condition after police say she was hit in the head with hammer.  Police have the man they believe to be responsible in custody.

It happened shortly before 7:00pm Sunday night at the Garden Pines Apartments, located on the 8100 block of East Harry St.

Neighbors called 911 after hearing a loud disturbance coming from one of the apartments.  Officers arrived to find the apartment door open, with a 20 year old woman lying on the floor with severe head trauma.  Officers believe she was hit in the head by her boyfriend.

The victim was rushed to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses told police the man had fled the apartment in his car.

The Kansas Highway Patrol found a vehicle matching the description of the suspects car that had crashed near where K-96 and the Kansas Turnpike meet.

Troopers located the suspect after a search of the area, and placed him under arrest.

Wichita Police say they are familiar with the suspect, and have responded to domestic violence calls at that apartment in the past.
