Wichita neighborhoods dig out on their own

February 02, 2011|By Megan Strader | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — You know it's bad when walking through knee deep snow is easier than trying to drive your car through your neighborhood.

"Couldn't get out of my cul-de-sac this morning so one of my friends had to pick me up on 127th so I could get to work."

So, Jennifer Mcdaneld's day ended the way it started on Wednesday, hoofing it through her neighborhood near 127th and 21st.

"It's not this bad usually, but it's pretty bad right now."

Neighborhoods like hers don't get plowed by city street crews. That had Dana Swenson and Steve Fogarty playing the role of "saints" for the past two days.

"We've helped two or three people out today. Yeah, three today and four or five yesterday."

One of them being our KWCH Jeep. "We saw you stuck and thought we should go help them," said Swenson.

All problems the pair says could be avoided. "The driveway here is drifted in. If there was even one lane through there people could at least get through without getting stuck. They don't have to clean it until it's shiny, but at least a lane down the middle would go a long ways," said Fogarty.

City officials say it would take too many man hours to try and plow the streets of all the neighborhoods.

Crews go by a priority list. First up are main arterial roads through the city. After that, they go to slightly less traveled roads and end with streets that lead from arterial roads to schools - meaning you're on your own for cleaning the streets of your neighborhood.

"I think most of the people in this area have some SUV's and some tough cars but it's pretty much you hope for the best and hope that cars have gone through," said McDsaneld.
