(HAYS, Kan.) — A Hays man is charged in Ellis County District Court following the shooting of a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.
46-year-old Ruben Herrara Escobedo was charged with one count of attempted premeditated murder, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on January 29, 2011. Prosecutors say Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Doug Schulte was shot by Escobedo following a traffic stop on a rural Ellis County Road near Hays. Schulte was hit by one bullet. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering.
Escobedo remains in Ellis County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
